Everything You Need To Know About Hiking With Your Dog

If you enjoy hiking and love to spend time outdoors with your dog, then we’ve got some great tips for you on how to blend the two successfully. Hiking can be fun, adventurous, and healthy for both you and your furry friend, and here we’ve put together some basics to keep in mind before you head out on the trail.

Planning The Route To Hike:

Getting lost on a hike is no fun, and can be dangerous so it is important to plan out your route. Start with a short trail, so you can both adjust to hiking together. This builds some tolerance on your dog’s part and lets you know how he behaves in unknown territory.

Once you’ve established that you can comfortably hike together, increase the length of the hike to suit you and your dog’s needs.

What Should I Bring On The Trail For A Hike with my Dog?

To ensure a successful hike for you and your dog, you’ll need to take a number of items with you wherever you go.

  1. Water: Always take water for both you and your pooch, and a bowl for him to drink from. There may be water sources on the trail, but they may not be potable, or accessible for him to drink. Bringing your own fresh water ensures he will stay hydrated.
  2. Snacks: Always have some snacks for both of you to replenish your energy for the trail.
  3. Cell Phone: Always let someone know where you’ll be and when you expect to be back, especially when hiking in an area you are unfamiliar with. Keep a cell phone with you in case of injury or if you get lost.

So you’ve got all the supplies and you know your route; now it’s time to enjoy hiking with your dog!

What Are Things To Watch Out For When Hiking with My Dog?

Keeping your dog on a leash while hiking is essential; it’s safer for both of you and usually required on hiking trails. This keeps you in control of your dog since on the trail you are likely to encounter other dogs and/or people you and he are not familiar with.

Keep an eye out for rough terrain, checking his paw pads during rest periods and after your hike, so you don’t leave thorns or other debris stuck to his feet.

Remember to take breaks and drink plenty of water. Rest stops are good for both of you and will give you a chance to really enjoy the scenery.

After you return home, check him for ticks and remove any you find as soon as possible.
